Dentures, also known as false teeth, are prosthetic devices designed to replace missing teeth and surrounding tissues. They are artificial replacements that restore normal mouth function. There are two main types of dentures: complete and partial. Complete dentures are used when all teeth are missing, while partial dentures are for when only some teeth are absent. They are custom-fitted for each individual's teeth and gum line. Complete dentures cover the upper teeth and palate and are shaped like a horseshoe for the lower teeth. These traditional dentures are removable for nightly cleaning. Partial dentures fill in the gaps left by missing teeth and are secured with a metal framework that holds the denture in place. Since missing teeth can cause remaining teeth to shift, partial dentures help prevent this movement and maintain dental alignment.
TYPES OF DENTURES
Dentures can be divided into 3 broad categories namely Complete Dentures, Partial Dentures and Implant Supported Dentures.
Complete Dentures are removable prosthetic devices that are used when the jaws have no teeth left. These can be conventional or immediate.
Partial Dentures are used when some of the natural teeth are still remaining. These partial dentures fill the gaps that are created by missing teeth. They are usually made up of Acrylic resin, Porcelain material or a combination
of metal and acrylic.
An implant-supported denture is a dental prosthesis designed to replace multiple teeth simultaneously. Unlike a conventional denture that sits on the gums, this type of denture connects to the jawbone by inserting dental implants
for support.
The first step in getting a denture would be the initial consultation with the dentist. The dentist will perform an oral examination to find out what kind of denture would be required according to your needs. The dentist will help you
decide the type of denture that would be required- Complete or Partial Denture. Extraction or any other procedure before getting dentures, if needed, will also be determined during the initial consultation. All your questions related to
your treatment, its cost, and outcome will be answered by your dentist.
The dentist will take the impression of the jaw where teeth are missing.
A plaster model will be made by pouring the impression with gypsum.
A special acrylic tray will be made on your jaw model.
To ensure proper fit, this special tray will be placed in your mouth followed by border molding so that your denture stays in place and doesn’t fall off unwantedly.
Further, a final impression will be taken using the same special tray.
Again the impression will be poured with gypsum and acrylic plates will be made followed by wax up rim.
Now these wax rims with acrylic plates will be placed in your mouth to set the alignment of your future teeth.(This step is known as jaw relation) So, that you can chew properly.
Teeth will be arranged on the arranged position of wax.
Once again, the acrylic plates will be placed in the mouth to check proper teeth alignment. If any corrections needed, will be done then and there only. If everything is found correct, the final denture will be made.
The final denture will be placed in your mouth. Instructions will be given to you regarding how to place and remove your denture.

Before you get your dentures you should be aware about the alternate options of dentures that are available. Let’s take a look at the alternatives:
1. Dental Implants: Implants are surgically inserted into your jawbone that mimic the natural teeth. They are a great alternative to dentures if you’re missing a few teeth. Dental Implants are a reliable, comfortable and long term solution for missing teeth.
2. Dental Bridges: Dental bridges offer a fixed, natural-feeling solution for missing teeth, anchoring to adjacent teeth for stability and functionality,
presenting a comfortable alternative to removable dentures.
Taking care of dentures is essential for oral hygiene and their durability. Regular care and cleaning are vital to prevent discomfort and oral health problems. Proper maintenance not only preserves their appearance and function but also
contributes to overall oral well-being. Here’s how you can take care of your dentures:
Always ensure that your dentures are clean for this you need to brush your dentures with a non-abrasive brush at least once a day. Though they are artificial, yet plaque and bacteria can build up on the teeth causing damage to other teeth
and gums. If possible remove your dentures after every meal and wash it with warm water but if you have complete dentures, then mere brushing would do.
Soak your dentures at night in water or in the denture solution as prescribed by your dentist. So that your dentures do not weaken, avoid chlorine with it. While putting dentures on in the morning make sure you rinse them with clean water
as this will help to remove the chemicals if any during the soaking process.
Monitor your dentures from time to time and visit your dentist if your dentures loosen, slip or you come across a change in the bite. Having ill-fitting dentures can cause infections and irritations.
Soak your dentures overnight in water or solution given by your dentist
Rinse your dentures before putting them on in the morning
Brush daily with soft bristles with tooth paste as prescribed by your dentist
Do take care of your mouth, gums, and tongue
Do not try and bite hard food
Do not use a toothpick or pointed objects on Dentures
Do not drop them as they are delicate and may break if you do so
If they loosen, do not try to fix it on your own instead visit a dentist
