Exiting offers Flat 30% off on Tooth Whitening on completion of 3yrs
Asymmetrical gums or excessive gum display can make your teeth look small and create disharmony in your smile. Options to treat this esthetic dilemma are orthodontics, gum surgery (aka gum lift) or a combination of the two. A gum lift is a cosmetic procedure that removes excess tissue to show more of your white tooth structure hiding under the gums. Other terms for a gum lift include gingivectomy, gingival contouring, gum reshaping, and esthetic crown lengthening.
Following gum lift surgery, your appearance and self-esteem can dramatically improve. The net effect is more white tooth structure will show and less pink gums will show when you smile, creating better harmony.
Does the appearance of your gums make you self-conscious when you smile? Healthy and beautiful gums are the key to a healthy and beautiful smile. At Sparks Dental, we want you to enjoy the benefits of both outstanding oral health and a smile you want to show off to the world. A gum lift is a single-visit procedure that can help you achieve your smile goals. Schedule a consultation to learn about your options!

Determine if a gum lift is appropriate for better smile harmony

Gum lift surgery, healing, and follow-up care
The answer varies. Sometimes, if the goal is to enhance the proportion of gums to teeth visible during a smile, extending the length of the teeth may contribute to a more harmonious smile. It's advisable to first discuss your aesthetic objectives with your dentist and view a simulation of the potential outcomes, both with only a gum lift and with a gum lift accompanied by porcelain veneers or composite bonding.
A gum lift procedure is a short surgical procedure that reshapes the gum line and soft tissue. During your gum lift surgery, you will be perfectly numb and comfortable. Using prefabricated guides, we will remove the appropriate amount of gum tissue and in some cases, it may be necessary to remove some underlying bone to prevent the pink gum tissue from growing back to its original position. Sometimes sutures (aka stitches) are necessary, but usually they aren’t. The gums are typically sore for a few days as they heal, but oftentimes there is minimal to no soreness following this procedure.
The duration of your recovery will vary based on the specific procedure performed, but typically, soreness subsides within 2-3 days. Complete maturation and stabilization of the gums can take 3-4 months. This is especially true for the papilla, the gum tissue between teeth. During regeneration, a gap known as a "black triangle" may remain for up to 6 months. To expedite recovery, it's crucial to adhere to your dentist’s post-procedure care instructions, which may include:
Rinsing with warm salt water after meals and throughout the day during the first week
Taking Ibuprofen to manage inflammation and pain, if necessary
Applying gels containing healing agents to alleviate soreness and promote faster healing
Brushing and flossing gently around the gums to keep them and any stitches clean, aiding in a quicker and more comfortable healing process.
Gum lifts are permanent when performed correctly. However, if the bone isn't removed as required, the gums may revert to their original state. Thorough planning and execution by an experienced dentist are crucial to avoid this. For a gummy smile, botox may be suggested to lessen lip movement, necessitating repeated injections every three to six months.
